Human Skills

Human Skills

by Michael Feeley June 9, 2024

As a career and life coach with 15 years of experience, I’ve had the privilege of helping individuals discover their unique worth. I’m naturally deeply interested in skills and values and believe in each person’s profound and genuine worth.

There are technical skills such as mathematics, computers, social media, tailoring, engineering, legal, and medical.

Then there are soft skills, which are hardly a just way to describe things like honesty, empathy, giving, problem-solving, talking, listening, connection, patience, sales, team building, loyalty, and work ethic.

Seth Godin aptly names these skills ‘real skills,’ a term I deeply resonate with.

These skills are not just important, they are the true foundation for happiness and success, professionally and personally. They are not secondary but primary, essential skills to have and maintain. They are the real golden skills that every individual should lead and live with, making each person a valuable asset in the workplace and life.

I call them human skills because they are about knowing and working with people, and as a coach, people are my business. Booking airplane tickets is a far different game than finding a person a job or building a new career because you’re working with a diverse and complex, emotional, logical, and profound living person. It’s a choice and skill to know and understand another person, not to see them as a resource, a commodity, a candidate, or an applicant but as a person, people, human beings just like you and me.

How do you want and expect to be treated in life?

What does another person deserve from you?

These two crucial questions help us to consider our own values and how we want to be treated and also treat others as we connect through our work, services, and products, even socially, whether we know the person or not. I’m talking respect, dignity, significance, relevance, individual living value.

Human skills can be learned just as you learn to type, spell, or write. You can practice empathy and caring, generosity, problem-solving, and integrity, and become good at human skills, serving humanity.
