Help
by Michael Feeley
Look around. Someone or something near you could use your help right now.
The plants in pots on my terrace can’t ask, but they tell me anyway, with leaves curling and soil gone dry. They need water, food, and me paying more attention and helping.
A stray cat with no collar and no name still needs a vet visit, a clean bed, a home willing to claim him.
People hire a coach because they already know they cannot change alone. They need another set of eyes, and questions and another voice, someone standing beside them saying, “keep going, you’re closer than you think.”
Helping is not weakness in the one who asks, and it is not charity in the one who gives. It is one of our deepest, oldest desires. The hope and need to be useful, to matter, to leave something better than we found it.
I know what happens in me when someone says, “I need your help.” I leap forward. Not out of duty. Out of instinct. I want to know how, and then I want to see if I can actually be of use.
Helping asks so little and gives back so much. Notice who needs you today. Then go.
