Hardscrabble

by Michael Feeley
I just learned this word, and it hit me hard.
Hardscrabble means scraping by—working brutal hours just to eat, just to survive, living in the heart of poverty where every day is a fight.
Right now, millions live this reality. War refugees. Families fleeing violence. People working three jobs who may have to choose between rent and food.
If we truly understand what hardscrabble means, how can we not act?
I think of these powerful words by Wangari Maathai, the Kenyan environmentalist and Nobel Peace Prize winner:
“In the course of history, there comes a time when humanity is called to shift to a new level of consciousness, to reach a higher moral ground. A time when we have to shed our fear and give hope to each other. That time is now.”
The alternative to hardscrabble isn’t just policy or politics—it’s extreme compassion in action. It’s caring about the person behind the struggle. It’s caring for them when they need it most.
Infinite possibilities for change.
