Grateful for a Lost Job

Grateful for a Lost Job

by Michael Feeley February 22, 2025

It’s hard to fathom that you’ll ever feel grateful if you’ve lost your job, but it happens.

After the shock, pain, worry, and fear subside, you begin to reexamine and reinvent yourself, figuring out what you want to do with your life and work. As you get answers, you will feel gratitude replacing your panic and fears because you’ll discover many opportunities to change your life.

Focus on knowing and honoring your skills and values and applying them to new job possibilities. Most often, your next act, new career, and encore will surpass what you have lost.

Frequently, I hear people I coach express how surprised they are to feel grateful to have lost their jobs. I experienced it myself.

At 58, I lost my thirteen-year job as a headhunter, and I was spiraling down into fear, worrying I was too old to find another job and how I’d earn money.

I took time off to regroup, heal, and understand what I wanted to do to be happy. That’s the key question: What do you want?

With the help of friends and others, I reached out to, I returned to school and became a career and life coach—the best choice I ever made.

Solid, inspiring answers, options, and gratitude emerge from adversity and loss.

Abrupt change is friendly, and gratitude is always right next to fear.

See change as an opportunity to learn, grow, and reset your sights on doing what you dream of and love.

Remember: You always have choices when creating new work that matters to you and others.
