Go the Extra Mile Because You Can

Go the Extra Mile Because You Can

by Michael Feeley November 2, 2025

We live in a world drowning in communication options, yet somehow people are harder to reach than ever.

Think about it: How often do you actually need to talk to someone, only to get silence? You send an email. Nothing. A text. Read, but no reply. You tell yourself, “Well, I tried.”

But did you really?

Here’s the truth that separates people who get things done from those who just go through motions: One attempt isn’t trying. It’s performing the ritual of effort so you can get off the hook.

If something truly matters—if helping someone, completing your work, or honoring your commitment is actually important—then you don’t stop at one channel. You try them all.

Email bounces back? Call.

Call goes to voicemail? Text.

Still nothing? Show up.

Send a letter. Find another way. Use whatever works.

This isn’t about being annoying. It’s about being serious. Caring, doing the emotional and empathetic work necessary to succeed at your mission. It’s about matching your actions to your words when you say something matters.

Those who truly serve others understand this.

Doctors who track down patients before a critical test.

Teachers who knock on doors when a struggling student disappears.

Friends who won’t let you vanish when you’re hurting.

“I left a message” is often a shield we hide behind. It protects us from the discomfort of effort, from looking too eager, from confrontation, the vulnerability of actually giving thought and taking action.

But here’s what this is really about: Don’t let convenience override commitment.

The multiple methods aren’t the point. They’re just evidence. They’re proof that you meant what you said. Modern life makes it so easy to look like we tried without actually trying. We mistake activity for commitment. Motion for meaning.

The people who matter—in business, in service, in friendship—don’t let convenience win. They feel the resistance, the awkwardness, the fear of being “too much,” and they push through anyway.

Because the commitment matters more than the comfort.

Connection requires vulnerability and effort. Progress demands that effort and consistency.

So ask yourself: Does it matter? If yes, then go the extra mile. Try the next channel. Make the extra attempt.

Sometimes the difference between success and failure, between help arriving or not, between relationships maintained or lost, is simply one more heartfelt try.
