Give Them What They Want
by Michael Feeley
When applying for a job, give the people and company what they want. Be generous. Be grateful.
Submitting your resume is a process in the system of finding work and getting hired.
Do whatever it takes to get the interview, to get in front of the decision-makers, and have them see your value. Knock them out with your expertise and skills.
Yes. Write a cover letter. For Some people, it’s a big deal.
Yes. Explain any gaps or breaks in your work history.
Yes. Have 3-5 current references ready.
Don’t complain. Be creative. Find ways to connect with the people hiring.
– Hand deliver your resume
– Mail one directly to HR with a smashing cover letter
– Write to your future boss, explaining why you’re right for the job and how he or she will benefit from meeting you and hiring you.
If the game of applying for a specific job seems ridiculous and time-consuming, then maybe this job is not for you, and you should skip it and not apply.
It takes work to find work.
Do whatever it takes to earn the job you desire. Give it your best shot and plenty more.
