Freedom to Learn
by Michael Feeley
Not everyone has the freedom to learn.
Since 2021, under Taliban rule, Afghanistan has become the only country in the world where young girls beyond the age of 11 years old (6th grade) are banned from attending school.
Afghanistan is at the lowest literacy level in the world. Only 29.8 percent of women can write and read.
The policy of “gender apartheid” also bans most women from working and participating in any sports.
I did not know these shocking facts. I discovered this while studying women’s rights through the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security (WIPS). It’s criminal and inhuman that this is happening in any place in the world because every person has the right to earn an education.
Free – Safe – Quality Living and Learning – are not just words to me but a way of life that should exist all around the world.
