Freedom Not Fear
by Michael Feeley
Today America celebrates freedom, gratefully.
But freedom also has a shadow. Its name is fear.
Fear tells you to lock the door on someone else’s liberty to feel safer in your own. It says freedom is scarce — that if others have more, you may have less. That has never been true. Freedom shared multiplies.
Fear rarely announces itself. It wears the costume of caution, of order, of protection, of laws, of change for the better. History shows us how easily fear becomes a weapon — against neighbors, against nations, against self-government itself.
Democracy is not the absence of fear. It is the discipline of choosing freedom anyway.
Honor the 250 years. Honor every person still reaching for what America has had the privilege to practice.
