Five Minutes to Experience Awe

by Michael Feeley
We’re often captivated by miracles in the world—not necessarily extraordinary happenings that are inexplicable and attributed to a divine agency, but rather remarkable, seemingly ordinary things right in front of us, like a bed of white Lily of the Valley that blooms at the end of April and into May. Its scent is powerful, gentle, and intoxicating.
In France, it’s called ‘Muguet.’ It was first presented as a gift to Charles IX, and then a tradition was created where a bouquet of Lily of the Valley is gifted to a loved one on May 1st.
The photo I’m using in this Daily is from my garden. This bed of ‘Muguet’ has been faithfully growing and returning to my yard for more than 25 years. That’s a miracle to me. As is the air I breathe and count on to live, the blue sky above, gentle and hard pouring rain, sunrise and sunset, and other people with whole, complex, valuable lives.
See what I’m saying about miracles being all around us?
Every day, give yourself the miracle of five minutes to experience awe. Let yourself recognize and think deeply about what you see around you. Turn all your senses on to the unlimited miracles of life around you. This five-minute-a-day gift of awe will help you focus your life on gratitude, liking, curiosity, love, and wonder.
