Finding Work That Matters

Finding Work That Matters

by Michael Feeley October 3, 2025

As a headhunter and career coach, I’ve seen it: work that lights people up from the inside. Work where they’re expressed, engaged, fully alive. That’s what I want for you – and for myself.

Finding work that matters takes effort at any age. You’re figuring out what you want to do, what you actually enjoy doing. Call it your choice career. Your chosen profession. Your vocation. Your work.

Why do we work? To make a living, yes. But also to contribute something because we know we have knowledge, skills, and expertise that matter to others.

You might be a doorman. You’re the first smile someone sees entering their building after a brutal day. You’re safety. You’re welcome.

You might pump gas. You’re helping a frazzled parent get back on the road to pick up their child. You see them. You help them keep moving.

You might wait tables, clean homes, drive a taxi, teach yoga, paint houses, wash cars.

As Kahlil Gibran wrote, “Work is love made visible.”

The value? You’re in the stream of human life. You’re touching people’s days, solving their problems, making things work, creating order from chaos, helping them breathe, move, arrive, feel seen. Every interaction carries weight. Every task completed allows someone else’s life to flow and be better off.

Even before you land your dream role – even now, in whatever work you’re doing – you can practice mattering.

  • Show up on time.
  • Be reliable.
  • Offer genuine, kind, empowering service.
  • Find better ways.
  • Help the people beside you.

These aren’t just actions; they’re who you’re becoming.

Ask yourself:

In your present work, what matters to you?

Where could you care more, give more, create ripples of good around you?

The work that fulfills you is often closer than you think. Sometimes it’s not about finding a completely different job – it’s about finding a different way to show up in the job you have.

That’s where transformation happens for you and others.
