Fear of Success
by Michael Feeley
The fear of success seems real, but it is resistance. It spills over into fear of the unknown and fear of change. Both can be scary.
You passionately want success. You yearn for it in some profound, particular way, for business success, as a painter, composer, writer, a parent raising a family+++, and you’re also afraid of it. Afraid it will happen, and then what will you do?
What changes will happen to you when success propels you out of your comfort zone and into new ways of living and seeing the world?
It sounds ridiculous to be afraid of success, to be frightened that your plans and dreams will come true. But knowing this helps you live your truth with comfort and confidence and move fearlessly forward into the success you want.
Fear is a gift, too, because it lets you know you will need to maintain what you have achieved, not rest and relax but be the alpha dog, continuing to do the work and lead with your life and abilities.
You worked hard to achieve what you want, and now you must keep working and realize that you deserve success.
Two people express it much better than I can, and I see their words as true.
“…the Mother of all Fears that’s so close to us that even when we verbalize it we don’t believe it. Fear That We Will Succeed. That we can access the powers we secretly know we possess. That we can become the person we sense in our hearts we truly are… We fear discovering that we are more than we think we are. More than our parents/ children/ teachers think we are. We fear that we actually possess the talent that our still, small voice tells us. That we actually have the guts, the perseverance, the capacity. We fear that we truly can steer our ship, plant our flag, reach our Promised Land.”
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world.”
