Empathy
by Michael Feeley
You can have empathy for anyone. You don’t have to like them, spend time with them, or agree with them. They may see things completely differently from you and your beliefs, but you can empathize with them—step into their shoes, see, and understand what they feel and think.
Even with bullies, you can have empathy. You can understand what makes a bully. Learn as much as possible about a specific bully and why they are the way they are. Perhaps they have been harmed and bullied in some way, and then they use their hurt to hurt others.
Empathy is goodwill. It can create forgiveness. You do not have to forget what harm a person has done, but it’s wise to release your anger through forgiveness.
Knowledge is freedom and strength. You can ask:
Who are you?
How do you see the world?
Why do you do what you do?
What change is possible?
Empathy requires logic, knowing the facts, and allowing yourself to feel. It’s emotional labor. It will change you for the better.
Be a wonderer and be curious about people and things.
