Earn Your Age
by Michael Feeley
Most people simply arrive at their age. They don’t think about earning it.
They wake up one morning and the number is just there — handed to them by the calendar, unremarkable, unearned. Something that happened to them rather than something they chose and worked at.
Sagers know the difference.
In 1947, Welsh poet Dylan Thomas sat down and wrote what would become one of the most defiant poems in the English language. He wrote it for his dying father — a plea, a battle cry, a son’s refusal to watch the person he loved simply surrender:
“Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.”
The poem is personal and universal at once. It is about one father. And it is about every single one of us.
Thomas wasn’t writing about death. He was writing about the refusal to stop living.
That is your creed. Your vintage core tenets.
Culture will tell you ageing is something that happens to you. A slow subtraction. A series of losses wrapped in polite euphemism. It will hand you a narrative of decline, retirement, and finishing up, and expect you to accept it quietly and gratefully, bowing out without resistance.
Don’t.
You are not simply living your age. You are earning it. Every hard conversation you didn’t avoid. Every reinvention you chose when staying put was easier. Every morning you showed up with creative curiosity, drive and commitment instead of resignation. Every decade you moved through with intention rather than inertia.
That is not passive survival. That is a life deliberately built.
The earned depth. The irreplaceable character. The accumulated wisdom that cannot be faked, rushed, or replicated. It can only be lived. It can only be yours by commitment and wise choices.
You are not done.
You are not declining.
You are a vintage warrior who has chosen — consciously, defiantly, joyfully — to rage against the dying of the light not with bitterness but with creation. With new ideas. New connections. New mornings that produce new meaning.
This is The Vintage Way. Not passive, vanishing survival. Active, empowering, joyful earning.
You deserve your age. You have earned every year of it.
Accept the grand Journey of discovering you – your entire vintage self.
