Doomscrolling

Doomscrolling

by Michael Feeley February 28, 2025

I just learned about “doomscrolling.”

Which is the choice to spend excessive amounts of time reading and watching negative news and videos on the Internet and social media. The activity was first defined around 2020, when the pandemic happened.

This led me to “internet addiction disorder – IAD.” Also known as problematic internet use or pathological internet use, the compulsive use of the internet that can harm your mental and physical well-being.

I then coasted into “negativity bias,” where things of a negative nature have a greater effect on a person’s psychological state than positive or neutral things.

This landed me on “FOMO – fear of missing out.” The worry that you’re not in the know about things or missing out on experiences, information, events, and life decisions that could make one’s life better.

I stopped going down the rabbit hole even while I had the opportunity to learn about “mean world syndrome.”

This entire early morning journey was a positive learning adventure for me, filled with a lot of pleasure and gratitude.

My surfing choice and purpose was to understand and expand my knowledge about something I didn’t know, and I achieved that. I wasn’t wasting time. I didn’t harm myself because I was genuinely curious and driven to learn, and the time I spent inspired my creativity to write this Daily blog. I’m added to from this experience, not lessened or distressed but changed for the better.

What is the flip side of doomscrolling?

What if we name it “pleasurescrolling?”

Bettermentscrolling

Prosperityscrolling

Respectscrolling

Optimismscrolling

Joyscrolling

Hopescrolling.

Choice and purpose are the leaders for everything we do.

Ask yourself – “Will doing this have a good or bad effect on me?”

Once you have your answer, you can then do what you want with your time and life.
