Commit to Care

by Michael Feeley
The commitment to care is at the foundation of nearly every aspect of living.
Care defines who you are. It doesn’t diminish you; it expands and enlivens you. If it doesn’t enhance your life, then don’t care. Avoid the emotional responsibility to care.
If you decide to have a pet, you must be committed to caring for it.
What will be the cost for food, health check-ups with a vet, exercise, and the amount of time to care for this lovely being that counts on you for nearly everything?
If you plant a garden, you should commit to caring for it, which involves watering, pruning, feeding, and weeding regularly.
You will most likely need a job to make a living, and that is a commitment to care about your work and the services you offer to people.
The same if you want to raise a family, which is an immense commitment to care for another human being in the most essential, steady, loving ways.
Commit to care—three powerful and emotional words that include the quality of care you’re willing to give and seeing it not as a burden but as a meaningful, empowering, and gratifying choice.
We each possess the ability to care. The crucial question is how far are you willing to go, and what effect will your commitment have on others and the things you care about?
