Caring
by Michael Feeley
HOW MUCH DOES caring matter to you in building a meaningful life and doing successful work?
Caring is a feeling and action of kindness and concern for other people and things.
Caring is a choice and a motivator. It’s empathy and compassion and heart. It’s a connector and unifier.
Some of my greatest feelings of shame in life are not caring, sitting back and watching instead of speaking up, and taking positive action to help, protect someone, and improve something in life – silently watching with fear, apathy, and contempt while others led and put themselves on the line because they cared to stand up for truth and justice.
Owning that regret changed me. Now, I speak, feel, and stand because I care how someone is doing, how something is working, and how the world can be better. I take responsibility and try because I don’t want to be cold to humanity.
My work as an Executive Coach is rooted in caring – helping other human beings live their best lives and creating change so they can move from where they are to where they want to be in extraordinary and sustainable ways.
When I think about caring, these powerful words of John W. Gardner come to mind:
“The renewal of societies and organizations can go forward only if someone cares.
Apathy and lowered motivation are the most widely noted characteristics of a civilization on the downward path.”
Be a leader of caring. It’s a mighty successful service to be in.
