Beside Your Self

by Michael Feeley
I heard someone say they were beside themselves with happiness, and I imagined they were standing beside themselves, watching their happiness.
It’s a wonderful phrase and idea about having an immense emotion of excitement that almost makes you feel out of control with extraordinary pleasure, nearly out of your mind. (and… it can also be related to other emotions such as anger and worry.)
When I won a part in a Broadway touring company, earned my Equity card, and worked with incredible stars, musicians, and directors, I was beside myself with joy!
I felt the same after passing my written and oral exams to become a professional life and career coach.
I feel it right now when I look at the book I have written and just published – The Next Act – A Complete Guide to Career Change, Professional Reinvention, and Finding Work That Matters. I’m abundantly proud. My life is in this book.
I also feel it when I see how some leaders treat other human beings with contempt. I am beside myself with rage!
When have you been beside yourself?
