A Portfolio Life

by Michael Feeley
A portfolio life means being involved in several activities and careers simultaneously rather than following only one career path. It’s a collection of interests, commitments, and practices. It does not mean you’re scattered, but rather you choose intentional diversification.
The economist and philosopher Charles Handy created the idea of a portfolio life.
Having a portfolio life is not only about what you do but who you are. This is especially relevant today with freelancers, working remotely, how AI is creating and changing jobs, and because people live longer lifespans.
Maybe you’re a blogger, podcaster, or editor helping people organize a book they are writing. You might also be a gardener, traveler, or you coach people on their lives and careers. You may also like to spend time with your family and friends. You may have hobbies, skills, and knowledge that are helpful to other people.
You like having more than one role or opportunity to work on that expresses you, and this works well for a portfolio life.
Knowing your skills can help you with diversity in your life portfolio as you move from one thing to another. This is one of the appealing superpowers of portfolio living.
A portfolio life helps you be at ease with diversity, which helps you navigate change well. You’re also good at organization, attention to detail, multitasking, taking risks, and being challenged.
Building a portfolio life means living your best life right now. You only get one life, so why not make it as interesting and happy as possible?
What kind of portfolio life do you have?
Where do you want to add and remove elements of your portfolio life to make it more meaningful for you?
What opportunities would you attempt if you knew you didn’t have to choose just one thing?
