5 Companies ~ 5 People
by Michael Feeley
When coaching people on the process of finding a new job or building a new career, I give this assignment:
Picture the exhilaration of being part of one of five companies or working closely with one of five influential individuals. Grab a pad of paper and a pen, and jot down their names. Then, delve into their world, absorb all you can, and become an authority on them.
See what stands out, where you have values and missions and surprising things in common. What jobs are open? What job would you like to do for the company and work with a specific person?
Then, use this information to build a strategic plan to meet the people, apply for a position you’re right for, or just get a general interview so they know who you are and think of you when opportunities come up.
Keep in contact and build a relationship with the people you meet or talk to, from the receptionist to the HR Director and more. Get the right spelling for their first and last name and their title. (I once earned a client because I spelled her first name correctly—Dianne with two N’s.)
Reach out to people you know and ask for help. Hopefully, you have been building relationships with the people in your social media databases, not just connecting for the number of ‘likes’ and ‘followers,’ which means little, but growing and assisting others because networking with the right people is essential when looking for a job. The right people can open doors you never knew existed.
